5/6/2008 - Fish and Game Sets Meetings on Wolf Hunting Rules

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has scheduled a series of public open house meetings around the state to get comments on proposed seasons and rules for Idaho’s first ever wolf hunting season.

            Meetings have been set in all seven Idaho Fish and Game regions.

Comments on the proposed seasons and rules may be submitted at regional public meetings or mailed to regional offices; they may be submitted at the Fish and Game Website at: http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/public/; or they may be sent by mail to Wolf Hunting Rules, Idaho Fish and Game, P.O. Box 25, Boise, ID 83707.

The 2008 Idaho Wolf Population Management Plan sets direction for wolf hunting seasons. The plan includes four alternatives for season dates for consideration. Proposed harvest quotas for each wolf management zone also will be on display. The plan calls for managing wolves at a population level between 500-700 wolves for the first five years following delisting.

Details for the fall 2008 hunting season are scheduled to be set by the Idaho Fish and Game Commission at the May 21-22 meeting, and brochures should be out to the public in July.

Global Warming:

The preparation continues in the Senate for the floor debate on the Climate Security Act during the first week of June.  NWF continues to gear up across the country for a huge push between now and the vote.  This week the opposition revealed some of their cards when Senator Voinovich unveiled his do-nothing alternative legislative proposal.

4/28/2008 - One wolf kill is not a pattern

It`s an even-money bet that politics influenced Fremont County Prosecutor Karl Lewies` decision not to pursue Idaho`s first wolf killing case.

One case does not make a pattern, however. Certainly, it`s far too early -- as the Greater Yellowstone Coalition suggested -- to overhaul Idaho`s month-old wolf management plan by creating a panel to review all wolf shootings.

3/28/2008 - Wolf Report: Delisting This Week?

Barring legal challenges, the federal rule removing wolves in Idaho and the rest of the Northern Rocky Mountains from the endangered species becomes final Friday, March 28.

When it does, Idaho Fish and Game will take over management of wolves, but little will change noticeably until hunting seasons begin.

3/20/2008 - Projects to Reduce Wildlife Collisions

Anyone who frequents the highways and byways of Idaho has seen some of the familiar sights known to dot Idaho’s roadside – gorgeous scenery, pretty towns, and picturesque farms.

But, undoubtedly, they also have seen the carcasses of dead deer and other wildlife – victims of collisions with vehicles.

To learn what is being done to help wildlife and motorists, the public is encouraged to attend upcoming presentations by the Road Mortality Working Groups of southeast Idaho.

3/20/2008 - Tax Checkoff Supports Nongame Species
Anyone getting ready to file their tax returns might consider supporting Idaho Fish and Game’s nongame program with a voluntary contribution through the state income tax checkoff. Fish and Game has always managed nongame wildlife to some degree, but the Nongame Wildlife Program became a reality in July 1982, following legislation that established the state`s first income tax check-off on the 1981 income tax form, which still continues as an important source of program income today.

Large wildfires have taken their toll on southwest Idaho winter range during the past two years.

Volunteers are needed to help Idaho Fish and Game rehabilitate hundreds of acres of winter big game range and speed up the native plant recovery process.
